New York City experienced a heat wave with temperature variations across neighborhoods. Jamaica, Queens had fewer trees and less shade than other areas, according to city data. Residents in that neighborhood also had lower rates of air-conditioning access. Health officials noted higher heat-related mortality rates in neighborhoods with limited cooling resources and tree cover.
