Vatican Excommunicates Society of St. Pius X, in First Major Crisis for Pope Leo

The Vatican announced the excommunication of the Society of St. Pius X after the group consecrated new bishops without papal authorization. Pope Leo XIV had explicitly opposed the consecrations. The Society of St. Pius X is a traditionalist Catholic organization that has operated independently from Vatican oversight since its founding in 1969.
