California set to ban ‘addictive’ social media features to protect teens

California's legislature passed a bill restricting social media features including infinite scroll, autoplay, and algorithmic recommendation systems for users under 18. Governor Gavin Newsom signed the measure into law in September 2024. The law takes effect in 2026 and applies to platforms with more than 10 million users.
