What's Next Following Monte dei Paschi's High-Stakes Move?

Banca Monte dei Paschi announced Friday it is bidding to acquire Banco BPM for €25.3 billion and Banca Generali for €8.7 billion, for a combined €34 billion, according to a statement from the Italian lender. Both bids are all-share offers valued based on market close two trading days prior to the announcement. Monte dei Paschi did not publicly state a reason for the acquisitions in its formal announcement.
