Panama Canal to cut number of ships passing through due to El Niño
Friday, August 21, 2026
The Panama Canal Authority announced it will reduce the number of ships transiting the canal daily due to low water levels caused by El Niño. The operator cited insufficient rainfall to maintain normal water levels in the Gatun Lake system, which supplies the freshwater needed to operate the locks. The reduction affects one of the world's most important shipping routes, through which approximately 5 percent of global maritime trade passes.
