Record cyclosporiasis outbreak tests the response of a 'weakened' health system
Thursday, August 20, 2026
A record number of cyclosporiasis cases were reported in 2025, according to data from federal health agencies. The outbreak occurred as state and local food-safety programs faced budget reductions implemented by the Trump administration in 2024. Cyclosporiasis is a parasitic infection spread through contaminated food and water. Federal agencies including the CDC track and respond to outbreaks of the disease.
