Under Trump, Protected Wild Horses Are Going to Slaughter

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management sold mustangs through a program that transfers federal wild horses to private buyers, who are then permitted to sell them for slaughter. Federal law prohibits the BLM from directly selling wild horses for slaughter, but allows sales to private parties without restrictions on resale. The Trump administration expanded the program in 2025, increasing the number of horses offered for sale. Animal welfare organizations documented that horses sold through the program entered the commercial meat market.
