Musk’s X poses “serious risk to Americans’ privacy,” advocates warn FTC

Thursday, July 2, 2026

The Federal Trade Commission received a letter from privacy advocates requesting it reject Elon Musk's request to end FTC monitoring of X, formerly Twitter. The advocates cited concerns about the platform's use of personal data for artificial intelligence training. Musk's X filed a motion in 2024 seeking to terminate a 2011 consent decree requiring FTC oversight of the company's data practices. The FTC has not yet ruled on the motion.
