Privacy advocates call on Maryland to investigate data brokers
Thursday, August 20, 2026
Maryland's data privacy law requires data brokers to obtain consent before selling personal information to law enforcement and immigration authorities. Privacy advocates filed complaints alleging that data brokers have sold consumer data to police departments and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement without obtaining the required consent, according to Maryland's Attorney General's office. The state's law, enacted in 2023, restricts the sale of sensitive personal data including location history, financial information, and biometric data.
