Scientists find closest star to the Milky Way's central black hole

Wednesday, August 19, 2026

Astronomers observed a star orbiting at approximately 8 percent the speed of light around Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way. The star's proximity and velocity enable measurements of the black hole's mass and rotation. Researchers used data from the European Southern Observatory and other facilities to track the star's position and movement over multiple years.
