America Runs on Natural Gas: Fuel Set to Surpass Oil as US Top Energy Source by 2030
Thursday, July 2, 2026
Natural gas is projected to become the leading energy source in the United States by 2030, surpassing petroleum's 75-year run as the nation's primary fuel. The U.S. Energy Information Administration forecasts natural gas will account for a larger share of total energy consumption than crude oil within the next five years. This shift reflects increased domestic natural gas production, expanded pipeline infrastructure, and growing use of the fuel in electricity generation and industrial applications. Petroleum currently remains the largest single energy source in the U.S. energy mix.
