Woman's puzzling decline turns out to be cobalt poisoning from hip replacement
Thursday, July 2, 2026
A woman's health deterioration was traced to cobalt poisoning from a hip replacement device. Surgical examination revealed grey fluid and tissue death in the area surrounding the implant. Cobalt and nickel ions from the prosthetic joint leached into her body, causing systemic toxicity. The patient underwent revision surgery to remove the device. Cobalt poisoning from orthopedic implants has been documented in medical literature as a rare but serious complication of certain hip replacement models.
