X-rays add new twist to narwhal's spiral tusk
Tuesday, August 18, 2026
Researchers used X-rays to examine narwhal tusks and found the structures contain two spirals twisting in opposite directions, according to a new study. Previous observations had identified only a single spiral pattern in the tusks. The findings provide new detail about the physical structure of narwhal tusks, which are elongated teeth that can exceed 10 feet in length.
