Tommy John, whose elbow surgery transformed baseball, dies at 83

Tommy John, a left-handed pitcher who played for the Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, and New York Yankees, died at age 83. John was selected to four All-Star teams during his 26-season Major League Baseball career. His extended playing longevity followed an elbow surgery performed in 1974 that became known as Tommy John surgery, a procedure subsequently adopted across professional baseball and other sports.
