Tommy John, Pitcher Who Gave His Name to Career-Saving Surgery, Dies at 83

Tommy John, a Major League Baseball pitcher, died at age 83. In 1974, John underwent surgery to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow, performed by Dr. Frank Jobe. John returned to pitching and played for 14 additional seasons after the procedure, which became known as Tommy John surgery. The operation has since become a standard treatment for arm injuries in baseball and other sports.
