Bab el-Mandeb Strait faces growing threat as Houthi attacks raise fears of a second Hormuz

Houthi forces have conducted attacks on vessels in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a waterway between Yemen and Djibouti through which roughly 15 percent of global maritime traffic passes. The Houthis, designated as a terrorist organization by several countries, have stated their actions target ships they claim are connected to Israel. Shipping companies have altered routes and increased insurance costs in response to the incidents. The strait is one of several critical chokepoints for global maritime commerce.
