How Philadelphia’s past tragedy prepared the city for today’s extreme heat

In 1993, a heat wave in Philadelphia resulted in approximately 300 deaths. The city subsequently established a heat response program that includes cooling centers, welfare checks for vulnerable residents, and emergency alert systems. Public health officials have credited the program with reducing heat-related mortality in subsequent years. Philadelphia continues to operate these interventions during periods of high temperature.
