Trump Touts Death Penalty for Cop Killers as Officer Deaths Hit 80-Year Low
Saturday, August 15, 2026
President Donald Trump signed an executive order Friday directing federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty for anyone convicted of killing a police officer. According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, 224 law enforcement officers were feloniously killed in the United States in 2024, the lowest number recorded in 80 years. The order applies to federal cases and directs prosecutors in those cases to pursue capital punishment in officer homicide cases.
