Catholic Group Urges Massachusetts Governor Be Excommunicated for Signing Law Legalizing Abortions Up Until Birth

The Massachusetts Catholic Conference called for the excommunication of Governor Maura Healey after she signed legislation in 2024 that removed the state's 24-week abortion limit, allowing abortion access through the full nine months of pregnancy. Healey, a Democrat, signed the law in May 2024. The Catholic Conference did not specify whether it formally petitioned the Archdiocese of Boston to pursue excommunication proceedings.
