Massachusetts mayor charged with wire fraud in $1.5M COVID relief scheme

Brian DePena, mayor of a Massachusetts municipality, was charged with wire fraud in connection with the misuse of Economic Injury Disaster Loan funds. According to federal charges, DePena allegedly diverted over $1.5 million in EIDL loan proceeds to his campaign account, personal tax obligations, and real estate debts. The charges were filed in federal court.
