Judge Nichelle Holmes, appointed by California Governor Gavin Newsom, released migrant Marcos Iriarte-Valdez from custody prior to his arrest in connection with the death of Todd Stewart, 68. Holmes stated in a previous proceeding that justice "sometimes means a dismissal," according to court records. Iriarte-Valdez was charged after Stewart's death, which resulted from a stabbing.
