America’s promise to our Afghan allies is still unfinished five years later

Friday, August 14, 2026

The United States admitted nearly 70,000 Afghan evacuees on humanitarian parole following the 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan, according to Department of Homeland Security data. As of 2026, the majority of these evacuees remain without permanent legal status. Afghan evacuees are eligible to apply for asylum, but the process requires completion of security vetting and immigration court proceedings. The humanitarian parole status granted to most evacuees expires after two years.
