Former CDC Official on the Cyclospora Outbreak

Wednesday, August 12, 2026

Dr. Debra Houry, former deputy director for program and science at the CDC, discussed differences between state and federal cyclospora case counts on Bloomberg's "The Close." The Department of Health and Human Services declared the outbreak contained in August 2026, while CDC data through August 11 showed 13,918 confirmed cases and approximately 10,000 cases under investigation. Houry noted that reporting cyclospora cases to the CDC is no longer mandatory, which she said contributes to discrepancies between state and federal tallies, as states may include suspected cases that have not been confirmed.
