Syria Sentences Exiled Dictator Bashar Assad to Death for War Crimes

A Syrian court in Damascus sentenced Bashar Assad to death in absentia on Tuesday for war crimes and crimes against humanity. Assad, the former president of Syria, fled the country in December 2024 as opposition forces advanced during the Syrian civil war. The Fourth Criminal Court issued the sentence related to actions during the conflict that lasted from 2011 to 2024.
