Meta can't stop states' $1.4 trillion lawsuit from going to trial

Tuesday, August 11, 2026

A federal judge ruled that Meta Platforms cannot use Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act to dismiss a $1.4 trillion lawsuit filed by multiple states. The states allege that Meta's social media platforms caused harm to minors through addictive features and inadequate content moderation. Section 230 shields online platforms from liability for user-generated content, but the judge determined it does not prevent the case from proceeding to trial. Meta has not yet responded to the ruling.
