Former Syrian President Assad sentenced to death in absentia

A Damascus court sentenced former Syrian President Bashar Assad and his brother Maher to death in absentia on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Assad fled Syria in December 2024 as the government collapsed and opposition forces advanced on the capital. The court's ruling was issued while both men remain outside Syrian territory.
