Tuesday, August 11, 2026
A Syrian court convicted former president Bashar al-Assad of war crimes and crimes against humanity and sentenced him to death in absentia. The conviction relates to actions during Syria's civil war, which began in 2011 and ended with al-Assad's flight from the country in December 2024. Al-Assad has not appeared in court and the sentence cannot be enforced without his presence in Syrian territory.
