Former Syrian President Assad sentenced to death in absentia

A Syrian court issued a death sentence against former President Bashar al-Assad and his brother in absentia for crimes against humanity and war crimes, according to reporting on the court's decision. The sentencing relates to Syria's conflict, which resulted in approximately 500,000 deaths over 14 years. Assad left Syria in December 2024 and has not been located since.
