F.D.A. Moves Toward Tighter Restrictions on Food Ingredients

The Food and Drug Administration proposed a rule requiring companies to notify the agency before adding new ingredients to food products. Under the proposal, companies would conduct their own safety assessments rather than submit to pre-market FDA approval. The rule has not yet been finalized.
