Space mirrors could ruin astronomy — and your eyes
Monday, August 10, 2026
Several space mirror projects have proposed using satellite reflectors to direct sunlight to Earth's surface for energy generation or illumination. Russian scientists conducted experiments with the Znamya project in the 1990s to test this concept. Astronomers have raised concerns that such satellites could interfere with ground-based telescope observations and potentially create hazards from reflected sunlight.
