The view from the proving grounds for next-generation nuclear reactors, Atomic City, Idaho

The Department of Energy is testing small modular reactors at the Idaho National Laboratory in Atomic City, Idaho, with several designs expected to become operational between 2026 and 2030. A 2024 Gallup poll found 49 percent of Americans support nuclear energy while 43 percent oppose it, with support higher among those living near existing nuclear facilities. Companies including NuScale Power and TerraPower have submitted designs for federal licensing review.
