Weak Jobs Data Masked by Falling Unemployment
Saturday, August 8, 2026
The US lost 23,000 jobs in July while the unemployment rate fell to 4.1%, according to Bloomberg. The decline in unemployment was driven by a decrease in labor force participation rather than job growth. Bloomberg Economics Chief US Economist Anna Wong stated that weak payrolls and downward revisions to previous months' data indicate a softer labor market.
