Sony’s PlayStation Puts a Nail in Physical Media’s Coffin
Wednesday, July 1, 2026
Sony announced that future PlayStation 5 consoles will no longer include a disc drive. The company said the all-digital model will launch in 2024 at a lower price point than the current disc-equipped version. Sony did not publicly explain the discontinuation timeline for physical media support on the platform. The move follows Microsoft's 2020 release of an all-digital Xbox Series S console alongside its disc-equipped Series X model.
