FCC Repeals 'Outdated' 39% Cap on National Broadcast TV Ownership

Friday, August 7, 2026

The Federal Communications Commission voted on August 6 to eliminate the cap that limited a single company's ownership of broadcast television stations to 39 percent of the national audience. The rule, in place since 1941 with modifications in 2003, previously prevented any one company from reaching more than 39 percent of U.S. television viewers. The FCC stated the cap was outdated. The change allows for greater consolidation of broadcast television ownership.
