The $20,000 new vehicle is all but extinct—what the most affordable new car looks like now

Wednesday, July 1, 2026

The average price of a new vehicle in the U.S. reached approximately $47,000 in 2024, according to Kelley Blue Book data. The least expensive new car currently available is the Nissan Versa, priced starting at $16,990 before destination charges and taxes. Other affordable options include the Hyundai i10 at around $18,000 and the Chevrolet Spark at approximately $17,500. Vehicle prices have risen due to increased manufacturing costs, supply chain disruptions, and semiconductor shortages that began in 2021.
