Counterterrorism expert warns Abdul El-Sayed Senate bid raises homeland security concerns

Friday, August 7, 2026

Abdulrahman El-Sayed, who announced a bid for Michigan's U.S. Senate seat in 2026, has family connections to individuals associated with organizations linked to the Muslim Brotherhood, according to testimony presented to the Senate. El-Sayed's father, Abdulrahman Al-Sayed, served on the board of the International Institute of Islamic Thought, an organization some counterterrorism analysts have identified as having Muslim Brotherhood connections. El-Sayed has also received endorsements from the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a Muslim advocacy organization. El-Sayed has not been charged with any offense and has denied any extremist affiliations or funding sources.
