Church protesters could face tougher penalties under rare bipartisan crackdown
Friday, August 7, 2026
A bipartisan House bill would impose civil fines up to $10,000 for protests that disrupt worship within 100 feet of a house of worship entrance. The bill specifies that disruption includes blocking entrances, making noise intended to interfere with services, or other actions that obstruct access or impede religious observance. Violators could also face injunctions preventing future violations at the same location. The measure requires that protests occur within the specified distance and cause material disruption to trigger penalties.
