Trump FCC kills TV ownership cap, claiming authority over limit set by Congress

Thursday, August 6, 2026

The Federal Communications Commission voted to eliminate the national television ownership cap that limited any single entity to owning stations reaching 39 percent of U.S. households. FCC Chair Brendan Carr said the agency had authority to modify the rule established by Congress. The change allows television station owners to acquire additional stations without triggering the previous ownership restriction. An advocacy group stated the modification could enable certain wealthy individuals to expand their broadcast holdings.
