Fake Verizon fraud call nearly stole his account

Wednesday, July 1, 2026

A scammer called a Texas man impersonating a Verizon fraud prevention representative and used text message verification codes and device changes to gain access to his Verizon account. The caller directed the man through steps that allowed the scammer to add a new device to the account and receive verification codes. Verizon detected the unauthorized activity and restored the man's account access before the scammer completed the takeover. The incident illustrates a social engineering attack method in which scammers pose as customer service representatives to trick account holders into providing verification information.
