EU urges Caribbean nations to shut down golden passport programs or face travel restrictions

Thursday, August 6, 2026

The European Union called on Caribbean nations to eliminate citizenship-by-investment programs, also known as golden passport schemes, or risk facing travel restrictions for their citizens. EU officials stated that these programs create security vulnerabilities and allow individuals to obtain citizenship without sufficient vetting. Several Caribbean countries, including Dominica, St. Kitts and Nevis, and Antigua and Barbuda, have offered citizenship in exchange for investments ranging from $100,000 to $250,000. The EU did not specify a deadline for compliance or details of potential travel restrictions.
