How GI Bill veterans, trade schools extracted millions in sham-class schemes

Thursday, August 6, 2026

Federal prosecutors charged operators of training programs that enrolled GI Bill veterans in non-existent or minimal-attendance courses, according to a Washington Post investigation. The investigation found that while prosecutors focused enforcement on school operators, they rarely charged veterans who enrolled in such programs to receive housing allowances without attending classes. The GI Bill provides education benefits including monthly housing stipends to eligible military veterans.
