Landmark Deal Would Officially Add Laser Weapons to US Army Arsenal

The Pentagon signed a contract with defense contractor Lockheed Martin to develop and field "Enduring High Energy Lasers," a directed energy weapon system designed to counter unmanned aircraft. The system will be integrated into the U.S. Army's operational inventory, marking the first official adoption of a laser weapon platform by the service. The contract was announced in response to increasing use of drones in military operations.
