Multiple states have enacted or proposed legislation expanding the circumstances under which individuals may use lethal force in self-defense. These laws have broadened definitions of self-defense beyond immediate physical threats to include defense of property, defense of third parties, and situations where a person reasonably believes deadly force is necessary to prevent serious harm or felony crimes.
