New Zealand Has Ended Greyhound Racing. Now It Has to Manage the Aftermath.
Tuesday, August 4, 2026
New Zealand held its final greyhound race on August 16, 2026, ending a sport that operated in the country for over a century. The Department of Internal Affairs committed to rehoming the approximately 2,000 greyhounds still in the racing industry and providing support to workers displaced by the ban. Racing industry operators and animal welfare groups negotiated a transition plan that includes funding for dog adoptions and retraining programs for former track staff and trainers.
