Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died on July 4, 1826, the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The day was marked with toasts and parades across the United States. Anniversary celebrations in subsequent decades grew larger in scale and scope. The 1876 centennial was marked by the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. The 1976 bicentennial included festivals, monuments, and events across the country.
