Why the U.S. stepped in after decades to prop up Japan's yen — and what's at stake

The U.S. Treasury and Federal Reserve coordinated with Japan's Ministry of Finance and Bank of Japan to support the yen through currency market intervention. The joint action marked the first coordinated intervention by the U.S. and Japan since 1998.
