Google Earth risked ruin with retracted AI tool for making fake satellite pics
Friday, July 31, 2026
Google announced it was pausing its Generative AI tool designed to create synthetic satellite imagery after the tool was made available to a limited set of users. The tool used artificial intelligence to generate images of Earth locations that did not exist or were altered from actual satellite photographs. Google did not publicly specify what concerns prompted the pause, though the company confirmed it would reassess the tool before deciding on next steps. The announcement came after the tool had been in limited release to select users.
