Canada celebrates its birthday as Mark Carney battles to keep it intact
Wednesday, July 1, 2026
Canada marked its birthday while separation movements in Quebec and Alberta remained active. Mark Carney, who announced his candidacy for the Liberal Party leadership in May 2025, has stated opposition to national breakup. Quebec has held two referendums on independence, in 1995 and 1980, both rejected by voters. Alberta has no formal secession movement with electoral support comparable to Quebec's sovereigntist parties.
