A Ton of Space Junk Tumbles Unpredictably to Earth Every Week
Friday, July 31, 2026
Approximately 50 metric tons of space debris fall to Earth each week, according to the European Space Agency. Pieces of defunct satellites, spent rocket stages, and collision fragments range from fist-sized objects to larger structural components. Most debris burns up during atmospheric reentry, but some objects survive and have struck populated areas, including residential properties and vehicles. Insurance liability and financial responsibility for damage remain contested between satellite operators, launch companies, and national governments, with no unified international framework currently in place.
