The Two Mexico Cities Fighting for Claim Over Soccer’s Origin

Tuesday, June 30, 2026

Mineral del Monte and Pachuca, two cities in Mexico's Hidalgo state, both claim to be the birthplace of soccer in Mexico. Mineral del Monte, a former mining town, attributes its soccer history to Cornish miners who worked there and brought the sport with them. Pachuca also maintains that soccer originated within its borders. Both cities have become tourist destinations partly due to their association with the sport's early history in Mexico.
